Pricewaterhouse Coopers Sponsors Jordan’s First Family Business Conference
Amman 6 May. PWC – Pricewaterhouse Coopers joins
the Family Business Conference that will be held under the theme
of “Success & Succession for Family Business” on 9 & 10 June
2007 as Gold Sponsor. The 2-day Conference aims to encourage
greater understanding of the dynamics of family businesses and
the challenges they face, in order to accomplish greater
business success and sustainability. The Family Business
Conference is organised by Events UnLimited of Jordan and
supported by the Institute of Family and Entrepreneurial
Business of the Lebanese American University.
PWC provides industry-focused assurance, tax and advisory
services for public and private clients around the world.
Through its Advisory Services Division’s offices in the Middle
East, PWC works with many Arab family businesses, both large and
small as well as families in the “founder” generation through to
those at the 3rd generation and beyond. PWC has successfully
implemented family governance structure, such as Family Council,
with the principal focus on addressing key issues facing any
family business namely: conflict management, succession planning
and continuity planning.
Statistics suggests that fewer than 6% of family businesses
survive beyond the third generation. “Due to the strong
influence that family businesses have on economic growth rate in
Jordan and the region, the Family Business Conference assumes a
high degree of importance as it sets forth to examine family
business challenges and present models of success from around
the world”, explained Samar Shawareb Ashqar, managing director,
Events UnLimited.
The Conference will feature many presentations, panel
discussions and case studies by experts with plenty of
interactive dialogue and networking opportunities. Amin Nasser
of PWC will give a presentation on “The challenges faced by
Middle Eastern Families and what some of the successful Families
do to address these challenges”. Nasser will look at the
dominant issues and challenges faced by family businesses in the
Middle East and at what do successful family businesses do to
address them. Some of these mechanisms, according to Nasser
include, “separation of Ownership from Management, creating
Family Councils and Shareholders' Assemblies, agreeing protocols
or constitutions for the Family, creating good governance and
communication between the Owners and Management”.
